John Zupan, Jr. established Zupan Electric in 1977, after working in the trade for seven years in northeast Wyoming and Billings.  Zupan Electric, Inc. was incorporated in 1998, employment ranges from three to fifteen full timers.  ZEI is a service oriented company that has also completed projects in most all areas of the state of Wyoming.  ZEI has bid and/or negotiated some larger projects, along with the service work.  Being service oriented, ZEI maintains an onsite inventory in excess of $200K and a fleet of five 4X4 service trucks, three bucket trucks, three digger derricks and a combination backhoe/chain trencher.  The inventory is also available to the public for retail sales.  The scope of the work that ZEI performs ranges from low voltage, PLC programming to power line construction and maintenance.  Being this diverse keeps life interesting and our day to day territory covers a 100 mile radius of Thermopolis, with on call status with other customers in the rest of the state.

In 1993 when the economy was totally in the can, ZEI built a 6000 sq. ft. shop addition to its existing humble 1323 sq. ft. office/warehouse/shop/etc. beginnings.  The economy was so low that I had people stopping me on the street asking me what I knew that they didn't.  My reply was that I was betting on the come.  That is, in hopes the economy would come back soon.  I am still here!!  The bank would not loan to proceed with this project, but I knew they would loan on the completed building, so I built it on 30 day accounts and with what cash I could muster up, then went to the bank.  What a ride!!

In August 2002 it came to light that ZEI was and had been for some time a victim of a not so honest but trusted employee.  She was prosecuted and is now a convicted felon.  Words of advice, keep your checks and balances in place no matter how well you think you know or trust someone handling your finances.  During the investigation I became aware of what a massive problem this is within the state.  Be vigilant.  It's not fun, but we need to prosecute these criminals!!

In 2003 ZEI updated and replaced the automation system that controls and gathers information for the day to day process of operation of Four Bear Pipeline.  This project included a PC based interface, ten RTU's and two repeaters covering approximately 30 miles as the crow flies from Four Bear field to Oregon Basin Station.

One other such larger project that we took on was the Wyoming Dinosaur Center in Thermopolis ( www.wyodino.org ).
